Sketching Globular Cluster M3 at the Eyepiece

This sketch of M3 was done at the eyepiece on the night of February 22, 2020. This globular cluster can be found in the constellation Canes Venatici.

This was the first globular cluster I have sketched in a long time, so I need to work on my technique. This dense globular cluster stood out quite a bit among the background, and seemed like a very densely packed ball of stars.

Globular Cluster M3 in Canes Venatici

For star placement in a globular cluster you would be torturing yourself to try to accurately place each star you resolve in the big ball of stars you're looking at. You'd probably spend hours if you went about it that way. I used what is called a stippling technique in order to place the stars, it isn't accurate for star placement, but helps layout the stars in the core of the globular cluster and get that densely packed star region feel that you need for these sorts of objects.
