This sketch is of the galaxy NGC4565, also known as the Needle Galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices. This area of the sky is littered with galaxies and just sweeping through you're bound to find a lot of small bits of fuzzy galaxies through the eyepiece. This sketch was another one I did on the night of March 27th, but since it was after midnight it was technically March 28, 2020.
NGC4565 the Needle Galaxy in Coma Berenices |
This field of view had quite a few stars in the foreground, but the real show of this view is the needle galaxy. When viewing this object in the eyepiece you can really see why it is nicknamed that. This edge on galaxy is very thin with only a slight bulge in the central core of the galaxy. While this galaxy is extremely thin you can just barely make out a dust lane running along the center, and where you notice it the most is as it crossing in front of the galactic core.
If you would like to see where this object is located in the night sky and view the time lapse of this sketch being done at the eyepiece be sure to check out the video below.
